Originally created as an exercise to learn how to program, Sodaconstructor became an international art phenomenon. The Sodaconstructor (www.sodaplay.com) website is a construction kit for interactive creations using masses and springs. By altering physical properties like gravity, friction, and speed, all manner of weird and wonderful models can be made to walk, climb, wriggle, jiggle, or collapse into a writhing heap. It went on to spawn a set of other applications like Sodarace and Moovl and was so successful that it won the 2001 Interactive Arts BAFTA Award, proving that it is indeed a top arty cyber celebrity.
Lesson for the future: digital art doesn’t have to stay put.
